So You're Ready to Get A Dog: What's Next?

So you have done all your research and have decided that it is time to adopt a new fur friend, but what's next?! Trust me, after owning five dogs and two cats, bringing home a new pet still brings on a lot of emotions that can be overwhelming, exciting, and nerve wrecking at the same time because you are now in charge of a living being's well being. But not to fear! I am here to let you in on some of the basics you will need to get started to ensure you and your new fur friend have a fulfilling life together.

First things first, a trusted veterinarian! Having a vet that you can rely on will make all the difference for your pet's health. Make sure you do your research and find the best vet that is closes to you, as well as a 24 hour pet emergency hospital to ensure you are able to seek care right away.

Next, the dog food that works for your fur friend. There are so many dog foods out there that it can be a little bit overwhelming to sift through. What I have learned by owning several dogs with sensitive stomachs is that you can never go wrong with a limited ingredient dog food. They may lack some nutritions, but you can always add them back through supplements. If that is a bit too pricy, the dog food that I, as a dog owner, trust the most is The Honest Kitchen. The Honest Kitchen has all human grade food, with lots of good nutritions that will keep your fur friend's digestive system, coat, and joints healthy.

Last, but certainly not least, make sure that the size of your dog matches your living situation. Having a very large dog in an apartment may not be ideal for the dog. If you do not have a back yard, or time for an outlet like training, walking, or running, then your fur friend may not receive the full quality of life that it needs to thrive. If you do live in an apartment, and have little time to exercise but you still desire a large dog, I would highly recommend investing in a dog sitter. Rover is a very popular dog sitting, boarding, and dog walking app that many people use to hire experienced individuals to fill in areas they are not able to accommodate for.

Remember: just because you need a little help, does NOT make you a bad pet owner, but do make sure you have enough time and energy to bond with your new fur friend.
