So, you're thinking about getting a Doberman? Well, you've come to the right place. Owning Dobermans has been the most rewarding, yet challenging thing I have taken on as a dog mom, and if you are up for the challenge; here are a few things I wish someone had told me before I got my first Doberman, Zeus.

First things first, Doberman whine! I have never, in my 28 years of life, EVER had a dog cry as much as my Dobermans cry. For every little inconvenience there is a very high pitch whine that follows. Not paying attention to them? Whine. Someone walking by the house? Whine. Not moving fast enough for them? Whine. This is not an exaggeration either! Zues will cry at the drop of a dime if it means I will pay any type of attention to him.

Next, we have the never-ending supply of energy. Make sure you can have at least 2-3 hours (if they had it their way it would be the whole day) of free time to walk, run, or hike with these dogs. Dobermans are working dogs, so they need to be exercised daily to meet their needs. If their needs are not met, they will result to destructive behaviors like chewing up the pillows on your coach.

In the case of my boy Zeus, he decided that his destructive behavior would be to attack other male dogs, so be careful when purchasing male Dobermans.

Last, but certainly not something that should deter anyone from giving the love and affection that these dogs deserve, their health. Dobermans, more than any other dog, are notorious for developing DCM (Dilated cardiomyopathy). DCM, according to PROCLUB "DCM can cause ventricular arrhythmia, or erratic heartbeats, and sudden death. Normal heartbeats are interrupted by rapid beats that fire too closely together, subsequently shorting out the heart, and the dog faints."

This disease can happen to Dobermans within the first year of life, so it is important to keep up with routine vet visits to stay ahead of it.

Overall, it has been the biggest blessing to love and care for my two Dobermans. They are so smart, so loving and beyond loyal. They will make you question your sanity while simultaneously making you never want to experience what life was like without them. So, if you were ever considering getting a Doberman, this is your sign.
